Framer Review: The Design Tool That Publishes the Website

Framer occupies a genuinely novel position in the design tool landscape: it is both a design application and a live website publisher. The workflow is simple in principle — design in Framer, press Publish, and the site goes live — but the technical achievement behind that simplicity is significant. Framer renders React-based websites from a visual design canvas, producing interactive, animated, performance-optimised sites that match the design file pixel-for-pixel.

The Design-to-Publish Workflow

In a traditional web design workflow, a designer creates screens in Figma, hands them off to a developer who implements them in code, and the design and the live site immediately begin to diverge as implementation realities require adjustments. Framer collapses this workflow: the canvas is the site. Layout changes made in the canvas are immediately reflected in the published URL. Interaction animations defined in Framer — hover states, scroll triggers, page transitions — run in production identically to how they appear in the editor.

For simple dynamic behaviour, this eliminates the need for developer involvement.

The CMS allows small amounts of structured content (blog posts, team members, case studies) to be managed through Framer's interface and populated dynamically into pages — covering the content management needs of most marketing sites without a separate CMS subscription.

Limitations

Framer's production scope ends where application complexity begins. E-commerce with cart management, dynamic pricing, and payment processing; user authentication and account management; complex database queries; multi-role admin interfaces — these all require code, a backend, and developer skills. Framer is a marketing site and portfolio tool, not a web application development environment.

For agencies managing many client sites, per-site pricing (rather than per-user pricing) means costs scale with portfolio volume. Managing 20 client sites on Framer is a different cost structure than managing them on a developer-built WordPress stack.

Verdict

Framer is the best tool available for designers who want to own the full workflow from concept to live site without a developer handoff — specifically for marketing sites, portfolios, and campaign pages. Its interaction depth and publishing quality are genuinely superior to both Webflow (more complex) and simple website builders (less capable).
