The most critical factor in choosing email marketing software is whether your messages actually reach the inbox. Look for platforms with dedicated IP options, built-in spam testing, and real-time deliverability monitoring. Providers like Mailchimp, Brevo, and Kit (formerly ConvertKit) have invested heavily in sender reputation infrastructure. A platform with poor deliverability will undermine even the best campaigns before they're ever read.
Modern email marketing goes far beyond scheduled sends. Evaluate how granular the automation builder gets: can you trigger sequences based on link clicks, purchase history, or custom properties? ActiveCampaign and Klaviyo lead on behavioral segmentation, while MailerLite is better for creators and small lists who want clean automations without the complexity. Most tools offer automation on their cheapest paid plan, but the trigger types and branching depth vary significantly.
Email tools price in two fundamentally different ways: by subscriber count or by email volume sent. If you send frequently to a small list, volume-based pricing (Brevo's model) can be dramatically cheaper. If you maintain a large list but send sparingly, subscriber-based pricing may be more cost-effective. Always calculate your actual monthly cost at your current list size and send frequency before committing to any platform.
For e-commerce businesses, native integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce matter more than raw feature count. Klaviyo is purpose-built for e-commerce with revenue attribution per email. GetResponse bundles webinar hosting alongside email marketing, which suits course creators and coaches. Match the platform to your revenue model — a creator audience and a Shopify store have very different email requirements.
